In the movie The Guardian, a Coast Guard rescue team goes into a violent, raging sea to rescue a husband and wife from the pounding waves. The team just about has the situation under control when the husband, out of self-preservation, panics and shifts into survival mode, which results in his wife almost drowning and the Coast Guard rescuer having to elbow him in the nose to calm him down. As I was watching this scene, I thought to myself that it must be very difficult to rescue someone panicking in the raging waves of a storm at sea or any situation. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this was a foreshadowing of my circumstances.
Elie Wiesel suggests that “God created man because he loves stories.” So if we’re going to find the answer to the riddle of the earth—and of our own existence—we’ll find it in story.
Our heart is made to live in a Larger Story
I know I’m a wreck. I know my failure intimately. Even so, God loves the hell right out of me. I am embraced, accepted, and rejoiced in. My life, with all its mess, with all my baggage and failures is welcome. And, so is yours!
Every journey begins with a first step. Are you ready to take your first step?
