Why Adversity Can Distress Or Bless

Why Adversity Can Distress Or Bless

Take a minute and think about your life and about some of the greatest lessons you have learned while walking it out. Not sure about you, but the greatest lessons have come through adversity, haven’t they?

The bravest sight in the world is to see a great man struggling against adversity.

—Seneca

It’s in the grittiness of life where we have the opportunity to face and overcome adversity which will build character, strength and resilience in us — if we let it. Every challenge and every difficult circumstance we successfully confront in the arena of life strengthens our will, our confidence and our ability to conquer future obstacles. The Greek philosopher Herodotus captures this in his quote, “Adversity has the effect of drawing out strength and qualities of a man that would have lain dormant in its absence.

God doesn’t give us overcoming life…He gives us life, as we overcome it’s obstacles.

10 Life Lessons From Hacksaw Ridge

10 Life Lessons From Hacksaw Ridge

Finally had the bandwidth to sit down, without distractions, and watch Hacksaw Ridge on Amazon Prime Video for the first time. Wow, what an incredible movie! The movie is Mel Gibson’s re-telling of the true story of Private Desmond T. Doss, an Army medic in WWII (Andrew Garfield) who served during the Battle of Okinawa without carrying a rifle into battle.

Spoiler Alert

Before the epic battle scenes, we get a glimpse into Doss’s life where he experiences the destructive nature of violence as a child which become the building blocks to his steadfast belief. Still, because his brother and other boys in town enlist in the war effort, Doss does the same — much to the dismay of his new girlfriend Dorothy (Teresa Palmer) and his veteran father (Hugo Weaving).

Doss excels in boot camp, outperforming most of the other men, but standing his ground in refusing to handle a rifle causes tension with his peers, Army leadership and his drill sergeant (Vince Vaughn). Taking this position puts his future in the Army at the mercy of a court martial. His entire unit questions if he can serve his country and have their backs without carrying rifle into battle until he more than proves himself when his company confronts the Japanese in the Pacific theater.

How Four Stones Taught Me To Live In The Moment

How Four Stones Taught Me To Live In The Moment

We spend so much time dwelling on the past, thinking about the future or working 80+ hours a week…and for what?

In the 24th chapter of Exodus, God speaks to Moses and says, “Come up to Me on the mountain and stay here…” Camping out on this for a bit, I realized that God understands human nature. God knew that Moses would spend lots of energy making the climb to the top of the mountain. And, like all of us, when we get to the top of the mountain we’re already thinking about and planning our descent.

What most of us miss is that we won’t pause and be present on the “mountain top”…and we miss out on what’s right there in front of us. Because we can’t unplug or pause, we miss those awesome life moments of being in the moment with God, with our families, fill in the blank _______________.

The issue is — are our eyes are open to see what any given moment is revealing to us. Here is a snippet of my adventures where I started to understand the importance of living in the moment.

Where Is The Courage Of Patrick Henry Today?

Where Is The Courage Of Patrick Henry Today?

America is at a crossroads and I love to review history to get inspired from brave men and women who helped shape that history.

Recently I came across that famous speech from Patrick Henry which I’m sure you’ve heard, at least in title, called “Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Death”.

Lets cover a bit of background first. The Second Virginia Convention convened in Richmond, Virginia – in what is now called St. John’s Church – instead of the Capitol in Williamsburg. Delegate Patrick Henry presented resolutions to raise a militia, and to put Virginia in a posture of defense. Henry’s speech was a call to arms but it also just shouts a spirit of courage. His words remind us that a just freedom can be held securely only by those who are willing to risk everything to preserve it. He urged his fellow Virginians to rise up uttering the timeless words: “I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”

All Hands On Deck…Man Overboard!

All Hands On Deck…Man Overboard!

The war on masculinity continues…

CoverGirl just hired its first cover boy, James Charles, a 17-year-old who just became the brand’s first “male” ambassador. The announcement was tweeted over social media introducing James as a “makeup artist, boundary breaker, and the newest CoverGirl with hashtag #COVERGIRLJames.

Instead of society hitting the pause button and shouting out, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute!!!”…it’s applauding the cosmetics giant CoverGirl for hiring makeup artist James Charles as its new “cover boy”. Our “progressive modern” culture shouts out through a megaphone that men are barbaric dumb oppressors of women. This culture is also empowering women to be independent in the workplace and at home without the need for men at all. Because men are becoming more passive to their God given roles and giving into societal narratives, it’s having devastating effects on boys — men are left searching for their place in society and boys don’t know where to turn.
