I am fairly certain that emotions are running high on both sides this morning, the day after the United States chose its next President. Here is the big question…can you pray for our leaders, regardless of your opinion of them?
1 Timothy 2 tells us to offer prayers and thanks for, not against, all those in authority — and it doesn’t have the condition, “as long as their agenda matches God’s.” …that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth! (v. 1b-4)
Check out Christ’s example. He put Himself totally in His Father’s hands, knowing God was in control of everything. When Jesus had His meet up with Pontius Pilate, He didn’t complain, get violent or scorn – He submitted Himself to that authority because He knew that the Father was in control. He knew that Pilate had no power outside of what God had given him. Jesus said, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.” (John 19:10-11) Jesus understood that everything happens in accordance with God’s ultimate plan and purpose.
Barack Obama or any President for that matter doesn’t truly know us, but God does and He is watching to see what happens to our faith in Him…despite who is in the White House.
“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” –Psalm 146:3-5
Pray for the President! Ask God to give him guidance, ask God to give him wisdom and to surround him with insightful Godly counselors.
Pray for courageous faith and ask God for His protection for all of us.
May God bless America, we need it!
